Pinecone Crafts Ideas

There are many ways to create beautiful crafts with pinecones and this season is a great time to collect them from the ground as they fall off the trees. If you’re not in an area where you can find and collect pinecones you can buy them from crafts stores and most pharmacy/convenience stores.

You can arrange pinecones around candles to make a beautiful display:

Decorate a Plain White Frosted Cake for Christmas

You can really pretty up a plain white frosted cake and make a wonderful Christmas display. It’s almost too pretty to eat and it’s very easy and fun to make. You can get very creative and crafty with your cake with just a few ingredients. For this cake I used:

– Sugar Ice Cream Cones – the V-shaped ones

– 1 Pkg Green Soft Jelly Sugar Candies

– 1 Container Plain White Frosting

– Green Food Coloring

– Powdered Sugar

In order to make the pine trees, add green food coloring to your white frosting until you achieve the shade you want. Invert an ice cream cone and hold it with your index finger placed inside of it and with your other hand, frost it with the green frosting using a butter knife, leaving the tip undone. When you’re done frosting most of the cone, grip it by the un-frosted tip and place it upside-down onto your cake. Make sure you don’t go too close to the edge. If the frosting on the cake is already dried you can spread a little fresh frosting in the spot where you’re going to place the cone so that it will hold it firmly once it dries. Once your cone is placed on the cake, carefully finish frosting the tip and while the frosting is still soft, sprinkle the cone with powdered sugar to create a snowy look. Repeat with process with more cones but make sure you don’t overcrowd your cake.

When you’re done with your cones in the center, place the green sugar candies around them to create the look of snowy bushes.  In the center, I put two little Christmas carolers, I cut out the bottom of a plastic cup and secured them on top of it with soft frosting and placed that on the cake, because the carolers would tip over if placed directly on the cake without the plastic piece. You don’t have to necessarily use carolers, you can place whatever you want in the center, whatever your creativity desires. You can also make little snowmen out of marshmallows to put in the center.

Decorating this cake is a fun creative process and you end up with a very beautiful result. The only problem is that you don’t want to cut into it. 🙂

Pumpkin Decorating Ideas

Decorating pumpkins doesn’t just have to be carving faces on them, you can make a lovely pumpkin display using things like sparkly beads. You can arrange them in different patterns and use different colors. In the pic above I used light pink and white and arranged them in size starting from the top going from small to large down the sides. You can find sparkly beads at your local crafts stores and some come with an adhesive back, you just pull of the sticker and attach it to your pumpkin. If you can’t find the adhesive kind, you can use glue to attach them.

You can experiment and arrange them in swirly patterns around the pumpkin with different sizes and colors. You can also use stickers and ribbons to decorate them. In the pic below I used face stickers and curling ribbon tied around the stem and curled to make hair.

Herb Package Accent Ideas

Using sprigs of herbs is a great way to adorn your gift wrapped packages. Not only do they add wonderful natural splashes of color, they also give off beautiful fragrances. They enhance plain brown wrapping and give it a beautiful natural earthy look, and you can also match them to colorful bright wrapping papers and ribbons.

Fragrant Christmas Potpourri

You can spice up your home for the holidays with a beautiful and fragrant potpourri blend using dried apple slices, dried orange slices, and dried whole slit oranges combined with pinecones, cinnamon sticks, and whole anise stars.  The combined fragrance is perfect for Christmas. You can also add drops of Christmas fragrance oils like cinnamon, orange, apple, etc., You can add Christmas colors to your blend like red and green leaves and pods, for this blend I added cedar tips for a splash of green and red bakuli pods for a splash of red. There are many different types of colorful pods you can find at aromatherapy shops and crafts shops that sell potpourri ingredients.
